Our Positive Action Team

VISION – We aspire to ensure equality of opportunity for all through Positive Action.
PURPOSE – To attract and recruit a diverse workforce and promote our organisational culture of Policing Together where everyone is treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
In order to further our goal to have a workforce more reflective of the communities we serve, the Positive Action Team provides support and organises information sessions and recruitment events.
The activities of the Positive Action Team aim to encourage applications from various minority communities and under-represented groups, such as Black and Minority Ethnic (BME), Women, LGBTQ+.
It is important to note that our recruitment process is open to all regardless of background.
All applicants are subjected to the same recruitment steps and need to meet the same high standards in order to be selected and appointed as a Constable.
Meet the team
Sergeant David Rushworth
I have now worked in the Positive Action Team for five years, striving to diversify the workforce of Police Scotland. Having worked as a front line officer in North Lanarkshire for ten years prior to this, I have a wealth of experience in knowing what it takes to be a police officer and the fantastic opportunities that will be presented to you throughout your career. Encouraging and supporting more people to consider this fantastic career is something I thoroughly enjoy every day.
Constable Gurvinder Singh
Since joining Police Scotland in 2017, I have been privileged to support the organisation in various roles across the country. This has allowed me to understand the needs of the many communities across Scotland, allowing the force to work in conjunction with the wider public. Working within the Positive Action Team from, allows me to support candidates from under-represented groups, who are considering a career within policing, not only by using my professional knowledge, but also my personal experiences, supporting individuals to fulfil their potential.
Constable Sarah Dempster
I’m the newest recruit to the Positive Action Team, joining the team in July 2024. In my 10 years in the Police, I have been very lucky to work in a number of departments; Response and community Policing, Event planning and School Campus officer. I feel very privileged and proud to be working in recruitment, helping shape our workforce to reflect the diverse communities of Scotland. Simultaneously, I love being able to encourage and support candidates as they progress through the recruitment process. One reason I love working for Police Scotland, is that no day is the same and that you are constantly developing your skills and experiences as you progress through your Police career.
